The BIG migration in Kenya
More than 1.5 million wildebeest migrate through Masai Mara. The most spectacular crossing at the Mara River takes place between July and September.
Our recommendation
For a first safari, we recommend February or November. Do you want the best chance of experiencing the Mara River crossing? Then plan specifically for August. Or do you want even more peace and quiet and lower prices? Then consider April-May.

Before you leave
Visum
All visitors need to register for Kenya. You can easily apply for the ETA visa online via the official Kenyan government portal at least two weeks before departure. Cost: approximately $40 per person. Online only, so it is not possible on arrival.

Money & payment
The official currency is the Kenyan shilling. However, in lodges, restaurants, and for park fees, payment is often made in US dollars or euros. Bring sufficient small bills. Credit cards are also accepted almost everywhere.
